How Chemical Peels Work
During a chemical peel, a solution is applied to the skin which causes it to exfoliate and peel off in layers. The new skin that is revealed is usually smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin. Depending on the type of peel you get, you may see results after just one treatment, or you may need multiple treatments for optimal results.
There are three different types of chemical peels: superficial, medium, and deep. Superficial peels are the gentlest and are ideal for those who have never had a peel before or have sensitive skin. Medium peels penetrate deeper into the skin and are effective for treating wrinkles, sun damage, and acne scars. Deep peels are the strongest and are used to treat deeper wrinkles, scars, and pigmentation issues.
The type of peel you need will be determined by your aesthetic goals as well as your personal health history. Be sure to consult with one of Genesis Advanced Medical Aesthetics staff prior to scheduling your appointment to ensure that you are getting the right type of peel for you.
What To Expect During Your Treatment
Prior to your treatment, your skin will be cleansed, and a protective gel will be applied to help shield it from the chemicals. The chemical will then be evenly applied across your face.
You will feel a slight burning sensation during the treatment which typically lasts 5-10 minutes but can last up to an hour for deeper peels.
You may experience redness and swelling immediately following your treatment which should resolve itself within a few days. For deeper peels, you may also experience peeling of the skin. It is important not to pick at these areas.
To Wrap things up ….
A chemical peel is a great way to freshen up your appearance without having to go through invasive treatment, and is ideal for busy people that don’t want to have any downtime.
